179 – Jim Kouzes: Leadership Expert & Author; Founder of “The Leadership Challenge”

Jim_Kouzes 2Jim Kouzes is a bestselling author, an award-winning speaker and, according to the Wall Street Journal, one of the twelve best executive educators in the United States.

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

Jim Kouzes has been thinking about leadership ever since he was one of only a dozen Eagle Scouts to be selected to serve in John F. Kennedy’s honor guard when Kennedy was inaugurated President of the United States. Kennedy’s inaugural call to action —“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” — inspired Jim to join the Peace Corps, and he taught school in Turkey for two years. That experience made Jim realize that he wanted a career that offered two things: the chance to teach and the opportunity to serve. It was in his first job back in the U.S. where Jim trained community action agency managers that he found his calling. Jim has devoted his life to leadership development ever since.

Currently Jim is Dean’s Executive Fellow of Leadership, Leavey School of Business, at Santa Clara University, and also lectures on leadership around the world to corporations, governments, and nonprofits. In 2010, Jim received the Thought Leadership Award from the Instructional Systems Association, the most prestigious award given by the trade association of training and development industry providers. He was listed as one of HR Magazine’s Most Influential International Thinkers for 2010 and 2011, named one of the 2010 and 2011 Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior by Trust Across America, and ranked by Leadership Excellence magazine as number sixteen on its list of the Top 100 Thought Leaders. In 2006, Jim was presented with the Golden Gavel, the highest honor awarded by Toastmasters International.

A highly-regarded leadership scholar and an experienced executive, Jim served as president, CEO, and chairman of the Tom Peters Company from 1988 through 1999, and prior to that led the Executive Development Center at Santa Clara University (1981–1987). He founded the Joint Center for Human Services Development at San Jose State University (1972–1980) and was on the staff of the School of Social Work, University of Texas. His career in training and development began in 1969 when he conducted seminars for Community Action Agency staff and volunteers in the war on poverty. Following graduation from Michigan State University (BA degree with honors in political science), he served as a Peace Corps volunteer (1967–1969). You can reach Jim via email at jim@kouzes.com.

Turning Adversity Into Opportunity

Leaders are no strangers to challenges; in recent years, businesses have experienced unprecedented layoffs, dismal sales, dwindling retirement accounts, and the bankruptcy of once-heralded institutions. While these uncertain times are difficult, they also provide the opportunity for great leadership. Over three decades of research, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, the bestselling authors of The Leadership Challenge, have asked thousands of leaders to describe their personal leadership best. Across the board, people say their 1118911296greatest moments arise out of the most difficult periods of their careers.

Turning Adversity Into Opportunity reveals how leaders at any level can transform difficult circumstances into opportunities for growth and success. Kouzes and Posner offer a clear set of six actionable strategies, showing how extraordinary leaders navigate through uncertainty, hardship, disruption, transformation, transition, recovery, new beginnings, and other significant challenges. Exemplary leadership disrupts the status quo, and Kouzes and Posner show how to awaken and pursue new possibilities and opportunities, no matter what the circumstances.

Wherever you find yourself in your organization or community, Turning Adversity Into Opportunity will help you embrace the chance within any challenge to make a real difference.

178 – Kit Summers: World Class Juggler, Author, Motivational Speaker

PHOTO 14 In Milford SoundFor over 30 years, Kit Summers has used his skills and experience to become one of America’s foremost educators in the field of performing, juggling, and personal achievement.  This, along with entertaining and speaking worldwide, as well as writing four books, he has found success in various ways.

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

Kit first took up juggling because of his love of things different and unusual. Learning to juggle in 1975, at the age of 15, Kit knew early this is what he wanted to do for his life’s work. After winning first place on “The Gong Show” at the young age of 16, one of the next things Kit did was teach juggling and performing at Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College at the young age of 18.

Kit went on to perform around the world and achieved the position of “featured performer” at Bally’s Park Place Casino in Atlantic City. He was doing 2 shows a night, 6 days a week, about 15 minutes a show. So, Kit was working about 30 minutes a day, doing something he loved, and he was paid very well for it!  Kit was always working on new and better things in the show, from juggling tricks to comedy routines.

At this point, Kit’s juggling was at a high level and he was trying to master juggling 7 clubs, a world record at the time. This would be the same as the first person to run a four minute mile, or pole-vaulting 20 feet. Kit didn’t work on juggling 7 clubs for publicity or fame, but as a personal challenge to see how far he could take his juggling. He got a run of 30 throws with 7 clubs and knew that he could improve on this trick. The juggling of 7 clubs was witnessed by a number of people.

Juggling and performing were such a joy for Kit. Getting paid to do what he loved to do was more than he could ever have hoped for. Becoming a featured performer at Ballys was a starting point on his way toward stardom; who knows how far he was going to go with his performing.

While on the way to the show at Ballys one rainy night, Kit paused before leaving the shelter of the parking lot before fighting the wind and the rain to get to the casino for the performance. Atlantic City had not seen such a rainstorm in some time, shrouding street lights and stop signs in a shiny blur; it was even hard to see across the street.

Kit was crossing the busy street when, suddenly, out of the downpour from behind a sheet of rain, a truck came on the scene. Kit thought, “There is no time to get out of the way!”  FINAL_BYP_book_1_placard_ON-SITE_OCT-12The collision was inevitable.  Kit was thrown onto the hood of the truck, broke the windshield with his head, rolled off to the side and tore off the side mirror with his body, and then laid in a crumpled heap 30 feet away from the truck.

After 37 days asleep, Kit slowly emerged from his coma. He came back slowly, and when he awoke he had to learn to do everything once again, including eating, talking, walking, and of course, juggling. Although he knew “how” to do these tasks in his mind, the connections from his brain to his nervous system had to be re-established.

In April of 2010 Kit was riding his bike. It was a nice sunny day, and he smiled as he peddled. Things were good. Suddenly, a truck was coming toward him and got into the left hand lane. His mind reeled, thinking, “No, not again!” As the truck smashed through Kit his clavicle, knee and three ribs were broken. Once again, he was in the hospital and rehab for months.

About eights months after Kit was hit by the truck, he was at home doing office work. The doorbell rang and he was surprised to see a local police officer at the door. The officer said, “Kit, I have to take you in to appear before the judge. Kit was placed in the back of a police car. He was told that his next door neighbor called the police and told them that Kit had threatened to shoot him with a gun. Of course, he had no gun. He spent the next month of his life in jail. You can read all about this in book three of Kit’s series.

Several months later, Kit was able to get some much-needed time away and he drove across the US, and then flew to Australia for a month, and then went to New Zealand for a month. The whole way he had set up juggling/performance workshops, helping jugglers to advance.

After that he focused intensely on his book series, helping you to go beyond your potential. Kit is available to meet with you, to speak with your group and provide solutions for advancement.

174 – Tom Dowd: Award Winning Speaker, Author, & Coach

CCIMG_7696-cropped-8x10-for-web-240x300Tom Dowd, AKA Transformation Tom™, is a loving father of three beautiful daughters and a devoted husband from a small town in Maine.  He is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a Communication degree, concentrating on interpersonal and organizational communication. Tom is a prize-winning speaker, an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author, trainer, coach, and radio host—all spurred by his need to be more than a painfully shy and introverted individual on a rollercoaster ride of success.

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

Tom is an active member in Toastmasters International, a group of 300,000 members worldwide looking to develop communication and leadership skills.  Tom joined in 2008 thinking it was just a way to boost his résumé.  It became a wonderful downhill spiral of failure.  Whether it was a speech contest or a publisher’s rejection, Toastmasters pushed him beyond his comfort zone to find self-awareness, belief that he could make a difference and the motivation to take smarter steps toward success both personally and professionally.  What Tom found was a boost in confidence that changed the path of his life and career.  In 2010-2011, he was awarded the District 45 Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year representing over 100 clubs in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and the three eastern most provinces of Canada. Now exhibiting consistent speech contest success, Tom is the two-time Table Topics District 45 champion for 2012 and 2013.  Additionally, he is a member of the National Speakers Association and the Global Speakers Federation.

With over 24 years of experience in the financial industry in management and leadership roles at the same organization and a plethora of inconsistency on this professional journey, Tom received the call nobody wanted:  “We’re downsizing.”  After unexpectedly losing his full-time job, Tom landed in a better place in just 59 days using methods from his coaching and training.   He is now a VP at one of the larger financial institutions in North America.  In 2011, he started his own side business “Thomas Dowd Professional Development & Coaching” where he continues to use the lessons learned on his climb up the corporate ladder to help people creatively find ways to differentiate themselves in the workplace and to find their own individual paths toward success. The mantra is “Transform into who you really want to be.”  Tom is the award-winning author of two books. “The Transformation of a Doubting Thomas: Growing from a Cynic to a Professional in the Corporate World,” details Tom’s own professional growth based on lessons learned in his career, which received Honorable Mention at the 2012 New England Book Festival.  “From Fear to Success: a Practical Public Speaking Guide” won the Gold Medal at the 2013 Axiom Business Book Awards in the Business Reference Category. Both are available in book and eBook versions, while “Fear” is also available as an audiobook.  His most recent book, derived from the unemployed stint, “Displacement Day:  When My Job was Looking for a Job” was published by Motivational Press in March 2014 and received Honorable Mention at the 2014 Paris and New York Book Festivals.  In September, Tom will begin hosting the “Transformation Time with Transformation Tom” live radio program on the Intertainment Network: Talk4Media (W4CY Radio)- distribution to iTunes, iHeart Radio, and Live 365.

173 – Larry Agresto: Founder of “Single Dads With Heart”

AgrestoOn May 20, 1995, Larry Agresto became a single father literally overnight. His wife Jody, mother of his two daughters Lauren age 11 and Julia age seven, was rushed to the hospital on Thursday night and pronounced dead on Saturday morning. She had not been ill, so this turn of events was both a shock and tragedy for Larry and his daughters.

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

Although he wasn’t aware of this at the time, Jody was and her last spoken words to him were “take good care of my girls.”  Larry made a promise and as a result, he committed himself to being the best single father he could be and he made raising his girls a priority in his life.  From 1987 to 2002, he has also coached over three hundred (300) student athletes in town and travel league basketball and softball.

He attempted to start Single Dads with Heart about a year after Jody died but between his role as a single father and his career in corporate America, he had to abandon his dream and project until now.

His two daughters are thriving young women today and went on to attend college, Lauren at the University of Connecticut, where she received a BS in Biology and Julia at the University of New Hampshire, where she received a BA in Journalism and English.

Single Dads with Heart was developed to provide support, guidance and inspiration for single fathers. Through Single Dads with Heart, Larry is committed to making a difference in the world, one child at a time.

Single Dads with Heart takes you on a heartfelt journey and learning experience about how Larry made a difference in the lives of his two daughters, so that you as a single father can learn how to develop similar results with your children.

172 – David Frood: Founder & Developer of “The Thinking Corporation”

David FroodThe Thinking Corporation corporate innovation program was developed by David Frood. David worked for sixteen years as a consultant to medium and large businesses, initially with an international sales consulting firm, then freelance. Client organizations include Hewlett Packard, Qantas, Diageo, Reckitt Benckiser, Cerebos Foods, CommSec and Daikin Air-conditioning. He became a specialist in implementing new sales/marketing process, change management and people development from sales people to senior managers.

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

This experience formed the basis for The Thinking Corporation book after observing many highly skilled and knowledgeable people who were frustrated by the boundaries and structure of their employer organizations. Employees would rarely tell their employers about ideas for new products, services or markets or simply to improve existing processes. It became clear that there is a much better way to manage both people and organizations through designing a company that is capable of harnessing the talent from within the ranks.

Following the book being published in 2008, the contents were then molded into a corporate change program that provides the framework for organizations to thrive through engaging the talents of the entire workforce. It is important that all of us make a start to securing the future of our corporations and provide security and prosperity for employees.

theoverwhelmedbrainPaulColaianniPaul Colaianni is the Founder & Host of The Overwhelmed Brain blog and podcast is a personal growth portal designed for critical thinkers.  As Paul puts it: “put away your crystals, throw your affirmations in the junk drawer, and start believing it’s OK not to think positively all the time.”

[saf feature=”itunes” cta=”Subscribe & Listen in iTunes”]

Paul believes life is an ever-changing journey filled with thoughts, emotions, and an unending series of unpredictable behaviors. Paul gives you specific, purposeful steps to help improve your life, and none of the same old, rehashed personal growth teachings you may be used to.

If psychics help you become fulfilled, then keep using psychics. If energy healing cures your ailments, then keep using energy healing.

Paul believes that you should “Always do what works for you, and not necessarily what you’re told to do.” But do it armed with knowledge.

“Critical thinking” is about questioning your own beliefs. When you question what you believe in, you either reinforce what you know to be true, or find out the truth – causing you to make better decisions for yourself. Either way, you win!  You will improve regardless of the outcome.

And when you combine critical thinking with personal growth, you not only learn and grow faster, you understand how to repeat the process, and teach it to others. Learning about human behavior in general is a fascinating, life-long process. But learning how to repeat successful behavior is a recipe for happiness.

So, whether you are curious about the complexities of relationships, mystified by the unpredictability of human behavior, want to know more about mindsets and emotional states, or just want some plain old-fashioned personal growth advice without all the fluff, Paul has it all here at his website.

Paul invites guests on his show The Overwhelmed Brain to talk about what they know on how to improve our lives. From human behavior to communication. From work and relationships to stress and health. There’s always an interesting episode to listen to. When my guests aren’t sharing advice, they’re sharing stories and communication. 1, 2, Many Podcast

1,2, Many Logo-250x250Tim  was inspired to start the 1, 2, Many Project after seeing media coverage of the epidemic of veteran suicide concentrate on the statistics rather than the human beings caught inside the crisis. As a veteran and a survivor of suicidal behavior, Tim wanted to change the conversation to engage the broader community in proactive solutions. The overarching conclusion from his interviews with survivors, friends and family who have lost loved ones to suicide, and medical professionals is that through empathy, mentorship, and repurposing, we can help each other.

In addition to the podcast series, Tim shares what he’s learned through these conversations by speaking at conferences, conventions, and special events.

They build awareness by harnessing their vast social networks to build a lifestyle brand championing the VE movement. Professor Kotter’s MIT and Harvard education laid the foundation for his life-long passion for educating, motivating and helping people. He became a member of the Harvard Business School faculty in 1972. By 1980, at the age of 33, Kotter was given tenure and a full Professorship—the youngest person ever to have received that award at the Business School. Over the past thirty years, his articles in The Harvard Business Review (HBR) have sold more reprints than any of the hundreds of distinguished authors who have written for that publication during that time period. Most recently, his HBR article “Accelerate!” won the 2012 McKinsey Award for the world’s most practical and groundbreaking thinking in the business/management arena. Kotter has authored 18 books to date—twelve of them bestsellers. His books have reached millions, and have been printed in over 150 foreign language editions. Arguably his most popular book, Our Iceberg is Melting, was released in 2006. This New York Times bestseller helped launch to a large audience the 8-step philosophy behind Kotter International. Written as an allegory, it is a simple, yet unforgettable story about a group of penguins on a melting iceberg and the changes they undertake to survive and thrive amidst an unclear future. This story connects with a broad range of people needed to effect major organizational transformations in an easily understood, clear way. Kotter International aims to do the same. Other widely read books include A Sense of Urgency, The Heart of Changeand Leading Changewhich Time magazine selected in 2011 as one of the 25 most influential business management books ever written. Professor Kotter is currently working on writing his 19th book.

To supplement his books and expand on his ideas, Kotter has released several videos on his teachings, most of which are accessible to anyone interested in his work via YouTube. His “Succeeding in a Changing World” video was awarded Best Video Training Product of the Year by Training Media Review and also won a Telly Award. His YouTube videos have been watched by hundreds of thousands and continue to be a helpful tool for anyone from students to high-level executives in the business world.

consiousparentingTHE CONSCIOUS PARENT

Transforming Ourselves Empowering our Children

This innovative parenting style recognizes the child’s potential to spark a deep soul-searching leading to transformation in parents. Instead of being merely the receiver of the parents’ psychological and spiritual legacy, children function as ushers of the parent’s development.

Once parents are learning alongside their children, power, control, and dominance become an archaic language. Instead, mutual kinship and spiritual partnership are the focus of the parent-child journey.

Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. To handle the behavior that results from this, traditional books on parenting abound with clever techniques for control and quick fixes for dysfunctionality.

In contrast, in Dr. Tsabary’s conscious approach to parenting, children serve as mirrors of their parents’ forgotten self.

Why Discipline your child doesn’t work… and what will

This breakthrough new book reveals why the disciplinary strategies we use with our children are ineffective. Dr. Shefali asserts that to parent effectively requires us to develop a deep connection with our children, so that we address the feelings that drive a child’s behavior instead of punishing them. Far from a laissez-faire approach, Dr. Shefali advocates for a high level of parental resolve that majors not in control and domination, but in helping a child develop a sense of personal responsibility. Filled with practical wisdom, this book lays a path to forge a new and empowered relationship with our children.

Terry StarbuckerTerry “Starbucker” St. Marie is a native Midwesterner now living in Portland, Oregon.  He’s been in the business world for over 32 years in various leadership positions, most recently as the SVP of Operations for Bresnan Communications, a cable TV operator in the Rocky Mountain west.

Terry’s career’s biggest passion has been the practice of what he calls More Human Leadership. It’s a philosophy that is unabashedly personal –  all about positivity, purpose, empathy & compassion, humility, and love.   Terry’s site centers on what it means to be a More Human leader, and the fantastic benefit that can spring from it, the Success Trifecta – a successful company, a happy team, and a fulfilled YOU. (To find out more, see Terry’s  “What is More Human Leadership” page).

Terry also talks about More Human leadership with some great authors and thought leaders on his More Human Podcast, available on iTunes.more-human-podcast

Terry started his career way back in 1982 as a CPA for a public accounting firm, and got my first taste of executive life in 1987, getting thrown into the deep end of the management pool at the age of 27.  Terry learned so much from that experience, and he summarized those lessons in his e-book “Leadership From a Glass Half-Full: The 5 Lessons You Need to Learn Before You Jump Into the Pool”  (click here to download).

Since then, Terry spent the better part of 23 years in the cable TV business, which has been yet another wonderful training ground, since it is so focused on people  – the people in the business who serve the customers, and the customers themselves.  It was by serving those people Terry discovered that to really hit the success trifecta,  HE HAD to go beyond the prototype of a typical “boss” and become a More Human Leader.

About The Book “Triple Crown Leadership”

In today’s fiercely competitive world, it takes more than “business as usual” to stay strong and stay ahead of the curve. It takes Triple Crown Leadership. Inspired by the most 51bHtK+BBQLelusive championship in sports, the Triple Crown of horseracing, this compelling road map is designed for leaders at all levels, from supervisors to CEOs. If you want to win, you’ll want this book.

Triple Crown Leadership provides helpful tools for any leader seeking a better way. The book shows you how to:

  • Be excellent (achieve exceptional performance), ethical (do the right thing), and enduring (stand the test of time)
  • Align your organization for peak performance
  • Instill a culture of character
  • Lead with both “steel” and “velvet”
  • Achieve impact and sustainability while maintaining high performance.
  • Turn your company around after a breakdown.

Based on the authors’ experience and interviews with over sixty organizations in eleven countries, this book provides compelling leadership lessons from an array of enterprises, including Zappos, Google, eBay, Infosys, Xerox, Spotify, Mayo Clinic, KIPP, Ashoka, and more. Executives Bob and Gregg Vanourek–a dynamic father and son team–show you how to achieve high performance, integrity, and sustainability.

In horseracing, it takes more than speed for a horse like Secretariat to win the Triple Crown. In organizations, it takes both head and heart, commitment to an inspiring cause, steel and velvet leadership, stewardship, and alignment–the practices of triple crown leadership. Triple Crown Leadership also provides hard-hitting, practical advice on leading turnarounds, startups, and social ventures–and addresses the leadership needed from CEOs, boards, senior managers, and even people without authority.

154 – John Kramp & David Atchison: Founders of “The Riverstone Group”

The Riverstone GroupThe Riverstone Group was formed in 1975 while John Kramp and David Atchison were both students at Baylor University. Back then, the company was called Kratch. From the beginning, Kratch was a global powerhouse… at least on the back of a napkin.

Actually, after college, John and David moved to different regions of the country and pursued different professional goals. They started new organizations individually but Kratch remained a back-burner dream.

In 1992, John and David reconnected in Nashville and reestablished their long-time friendship. When telling others about their college days, they laughed about Kratch. The problem was that neither of them could remember how the company was going to make money. They just knew it was going to be big.

In 2011, over coffee, they decided the time had come to make Kratch a reality. With wise counsel from their wives, they determined that rather than Kratch, they would name the company The Riverstone Group.

JohnJohn Kramp led as a division president and corporate vice president at LifeWay, a $500 million private company based in Nashville. Before his 20-year business career, John led churches for 15 years in Texas and Oregon.

With an MBA from Northwestern University (Kellogg Graduate School of Management), an MDiv from Southwestern Seminary and a BA in Sociology from Baylor University, John brings a rich set of business and educational experiences.

John has published three books including, On Track Leadership: Mastering What Leaders Actually Do.

DavidDavid Atchison is a 35-year veteran in commercial real estate development and consulting in the Shopping Center industry. For the last two decades, he has provided expertise and wisdom for professionals and organizations, focusing specifically on small business leaders.

David also directs Higher Call, a ministry that has challenged thousands of business professionals over the last 15 years.

He founded the Retail Christian Network and has published two books including Reflections on a Higher Call. David has a BBA in Business Administration from Baylor University.
