123 – Thomas Kolditz: Leadership Professor, Yale School of Management; Author of “In Extremis Leadership”

A retired brigadier general and titled Professor Emeritus by the U.S. Military Academy, Tom led the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point, for 12 years. In that role, he was responsible for teaching, research, and outreach activities in management, leader development science, psychology, and sociology. A highly experienced global leader, General Kolditz has more than 26 years in leader roles on four continents. His career has focused both on leading organizations and studying leadership and leadership policy across sectors. He served for two years as a leadership and human resources policy analyst in the Pentagon, and a year as a concept developer in the Center for Army Leadership, and was the founding director of the West Point Leadership Center. He was instrumental in the design and formation of the Thayer Leader Development Group, and is the managing member of Saxon Castle LLC, a leader development consultancy.

Professor Kolditz is an internationally recognized expert on crisis leadership and leadership in extreme contexts and in the development of programs to inculcate leadership and leader development in everything from project teams to large organizations. He has published extensively across a diverse array of academic and leadership trade journals, and serves on the editorial and advisory boards of several academic journals. He is a fellow in the American Psychological Association and is a member of the Academy of Management. ALISON-LEVINEAlison Levine is an adventurer, explorer and mountaineer. She has climbed the highest peak on every continent, served as the team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, and skied across the Arctic Circle to the geographic North Pole.

In January 2008 she made history as the first American to complete a 600-mile traverse from west Antarctica to the South Pole following the route of legendary explorer Reinhold Messner. In May 2010 she completed the Adventure Grand Slam – climbing the 7 Summits (highest peak on each continent) and skiing to both Poles, an accomplishment fewer than 30 people in the world can claim. Her success in extreme environments is noteworthy given she has had 3 heart surgeries and suffers from a neurological disease that causes the arteries that feed her fingers and toes to collapse in cold weather, leaving her at extreme risk for frostbite.

Levine’s expeditions have been documented by more than 450 media outlets. She is the subject of the PBS documentary Living Courageously (2007) and has made numerous appearances on The Today ShowGood Morning America, CNN, CNBC, FOX, CBS’ Evening News, and other national programs. 117 – Allen West: Retired Army Officer, Former US Congressman, Conservative Political Activist

During his 22 year career in the United States Army, Lieutenant Colonel West served in several combat zones: in Operation Desert Storm, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was a Battalion Commander in the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, and later in Afghanistan. He received many honors including a Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and a Valorous Unit Award. In 1993 he was named the US Army ROTC Instructor of the Year.

After his retirement from the Army in 2004, Allen taught high school for a year before returning to Afghanistan as a civilian military adviser to the Afghan army, an assignment he finished in November 2007.

Since 1968, Pat has been in the NBA as general manager for teams in Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia—including the 1983 World Champion 76ers—and now the Orlando Magic, which he co-founded in 1987 and helped lead to the NBA finals in 1995 and 2009. In 1996, Pat was named as one of the 50 most influential people in NBA history by Beckett’s, a national publication. In 2012, Pat received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Pat has been an integral part of NBA history, including bringing the NBA to Orlando.  He has traded Pete Maravich as well as traded for Julius Erving, Moses Malone, and Penny Hardaway. He has won four NBA draft lotteries, including back-to-back winners in 1992 and 1993. He also drafted Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney and Darryl Dawkins.  He signed Billy Cunningham, Chuck Daly, and Matt Guokas to their first professional coaching contracts. Nineteen of his former players have become NBA head coaches, nine have become college head coaches while seven have become assistant NBA coaches.

Additionally, Pat served for seven years in the United States Army, spent seven years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization—two as a minor league catcher and five in the front office—and has also spent three years in the Minnesota Twins organization.

Pat and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of 19 children, including 14 adopted from four nations, ranging in age from 26 to 40. For one year, 16 of his children were all teenagers at the same time. Currently, Pat has 12 grandchildren and counting…with twins due in July. Pat and his family have been featured in Sports Illustrated, Readers Digest, Good Housekeeping, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Focus on the Family as well as all of the major network and cable television news channels.

Pat was diagnosed in February of 2011 with Multiple Myeloma.  After several rounds of chemo treatments, Pat received a bone marrow transplant where the doctors injected him with almost 5 million of his own stem cells.  Pat’s recovery from the stem cell transplant has been remarkable and the doctors are extremely pleased.  While Multiple Myeloma is incurable the goal is to get the cancer into remission (Pat’s personal slogan has been “The Mission is Remission”); Pat’s doctors have told him that they are unable to detect any myeloma in his body.  Pat has accepted positions on several boards for different cancer groups, including an appointment on the Board of Directors for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Pat spends many hours each week responding to emails and phone calls of others affected by cancer, offering hope and words of encouragement.

Pat teaches an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Orlando and hosts three weekly radio shows. In the last 15 years, he has completed 58 marathons—most recently, the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon—and also climbed Mt. Rainier. He is a weightlifter, Civil War buff and serious baseball fan. Every winter he plays in Major League Fantasy Camps and has caught Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, Rollie Fingers, Gaylord Perry, Phil Niekro, Tom Seaver and Goose Gossage.

Pat was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, earned his bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University, and his master’s degree at Indiana University. 102 – Gregg Marshall: Head Basketball Coach for Wichita State Shockers

Gregg_Marshall_Mens_Basketball_coach_at_Wichita_State_50353Gregg Marshall, whose teams have gone to the NCAA tournament nine of the last 15 seasons, including the Final Four in a record-breaking 2012-13 season, was named the 25th head men’s basketball coach at Wichita State on April 14, 2007.

In 2012-13, a Final Four appearance by the Shockers topped a six-year reconstruction at Wichita State under Marshall. En route, WSU defeated Pittsburgh, Gonzaga, La Salle, and Ohio State before losing to eventual National Champion Louisville in the National Semifinal game in Atlanta. The voters in the USA Today Coaches poll rewarded the Shockers with a final No. 4 ranking, their highest final ranking ever.

Marshall has also coached WSU to the richest four-year stretch in school history as the Shockers have won a record 111 games.  Marshall earned the Valley’s Coach-of-the-Year award in 2012 and 2013, while his teams earned the Valley’s Defensive Team of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Marshall carries a 139-70 record in six years at Wichita State, and a 333-153 record in 15 seasons as a head coach.wushock

The back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2012 and 2013 were the first for the school since 1987 and 1988, the first in 24 years, while WSU’s 2012 Missouri Valley Conference championship was the first since 2006.

Entering the 2012-13 season, the Shockers had the best two-season record in WSU history after taking WSU back to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2006, while they also won the 2011 NIT Postseason Tournament with a 5-0 record that included a finals trip to Madison Square Garden where WSU defeated Washington State and Alabama.

The reconstruction brought WSU from 11 wins in Marshall’s first season to a school-record 30 wins in 2013 that ended with the Final Four trip, the second for the Shockers, but the first in 48 years.

Marshall also coached the Shockers to the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Portland, Ore., where WSU lost to VCU in the Second/Third Round game.

Marshall’s 2009-10 team played in the postseason NIT, received votes in the AP poll and advanced to the MVC Tournament title game, while the 2009-10 team played in the CBI.

Marshall, who reached 300 career wins in 2012, came to WSU after completing his ninth year at the Winthrop helm, as he led the Eagles to their finest year with a third-straight Big South Conference championship, a seventh NCAA appearance and the school’s first win in the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles were ranked No. 22 in the AP and USA Today Top 25 polls. Marshall was named the Collegehoops.net 2007 Mid-Major Coach of the Year for his efforts, and also received the Collegeinsider.com Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award.

In 2006-07, Winthrop finished 29-5 and was the first team in Big South history to go undefeated during the regular season as the Eagles went 14-0 in loop play, and swept the Big South Tournament in three games. With the 29 victories, Marshall became the all-time winningest coach in Big South history, surpassing former Radford head coach Ron Bradley who compiled 192 wins in 11 years. In addition to the two National Mid-Major Coach of the Year awards, Marshall was voted the 2007 Big South Conference Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time he has received the award (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007).

Under Marshall’s leadership, Winthrop had six 20-win seasons and averaged more than 20 victories per year. He led the Eagles to seven NCAA tournament appearances during his nine seasons, including four consecutive trips during his first four years at the helm. His 2006-07 team established new Big South Conference and school records for victories with the 29-5 record. The 2005-06 team compiled a 23-7 record and came within a basket of capturing its first victory in the NCAA tournament.

During the 2005-06 season, Marshall became the winningest coach in Winthrop men’s basketball history, passing Nield Gordon’s mark of 161. In 1999, his first year as Winthrop head coach after being named to the position in April, 1998, he led the Eagles to a 21-8 record, their first-ever Big South Conference regular-season championship, the conference tournament title and the school’s first trip to the NCAA tournament. Winthrop’s improvement of 14 victories over the 1997-98 season was one of the biggest turnarounds for NCAA Division I programs.

Winthrop received a No. 14 seed, the highest ever by a Big South Conference member, as the Eagles faced Oklahoma in the West Region at Tucson, Ariz. Sports Illustrated’s NCAA preview picked the Eagles to defeat the Sooners, but that didn’t come to fruition. Winthrop finished the year with a 21-9 record to give Marshall a 42-17 head coaching mark after two years. He led the Eagles to another Big South Tournament title in 2000 and a second trip to the Big Dance, and then made it a three-peat in 2001 as his coaching skills were put to the test. WU was hit hard by the injury bug, but still managed to compile an 18-13 record and make its third-straight Big South title and trip to the Big Dance.

His 2001-02 team also overcame a series of injuries to win a fourth-straight conference title and earn the right to face top-ranked Duke in the NCAA tournament and finished 19-12. The following year, Marshall again reached the 20-win plateau, but missed the NCAA Tournament with a 20-10 record, 11-3 in the BSC, after dropping an 81-80 overtime semifinal game to UNC-Asheville in the Big South Tournament.

Winthrop went 16-12 in 2003-04 before returning to the NCAA Tournament in 2004-05 with a 27-6 record, after defeating Charleston Southern to win the BSC Tournament.

During the two years leading up to his arrival at Winthrop, Marshall served as an assistant coach at Marshall University where he helped guide the Thundering Herd to the 1997 Southern Conference championship.

Prior to that, he was an assistant on John Kresse’s staff at the College of Charleston for eight years from 1988-1996 when the Cougars made the most successful transition ever from NAIA to NCAA Division I. During Marshall’s years at the College of Charleston, the Cougars received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in 1994, and consecutive NIT invitations in 1995 and 1996.

While at Marshall, he recruited 1998 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Travis Young, along with MAC All-Freshman team member Joda Burgess. The 1997 recruiting class at Marshall was ranked by ESPN as the best in the MAC and among the Top 40 in the nation.

While at the College of Charleston, Marshall was instrumental in the recruitment of NBA-caliber student-athletes from the state of South Carolina that include Anthony Johnson, a current member of the Atlanta Hawks, Marion Busby and Thaddeous Delaney. All three players were voted Trans-America Athletic Conference Players of the Year.

Prior to joining Kresse’s staff in Charleston, Marshall spent one year as an assistant at Belmont Abbey College (1987-88), and two years as an assistant at his alma mater at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA, (1985-1987).

In 13 years as an assistant coach, the schools that Marshall was associated with compiled a record of 268-129 for a success rate of 68 percent.

Marshall received a B.A. degree in economics/business in 1985 from Randolph-Macon and earned the Master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Richmond in 1987.

He is married to the former Lynn Munday of Bellingham, Wash., who earned her master’s degree from the College of Charleston. They are the parents of a son, Kellen, and a daughter, Maggie.

95 – Jessie Jane Duff: Veterans Advocate – Spokesperson for Concerned Veterans for America

Jessie Jane DuffJessie Jane Duff is on the Organizing Committee for Concerned Veterans for America.

Jessie served 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired a Gunnery Sergeant. Along with multiple overseas deployments and combat related exercises, she provided logistical support to combat arms and wing units throughout her career, including Desert Storm and the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. In a collateral duty, Jessie served on the Executive Staff as the Equal Opportunity Advisor to the Commander of Marine Forces Pacific, the largest operational command in the Marine Corps prior to her retirement. She completed her career as a Motor Transport Operations Chief at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Jessie’s personal awards include three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and two National Defense Medals in addition to various awards for excellence during her time on active duty.

In 2009-2012, Jessie was the spokesperson for Military Voting Rights USA, a national network dedicated to ensure active duty military voters have their votes cast and counted on time. She made national media appearances and advocated for timely and expedited mail delivery of ballots to American service men and women stationed overseas. Jessie testified before Congress’ Elections Subcommittee, Committee on House Administration based on her first-hand experience and concerns about voting rights for active duty military overseas personnel. She also was a highly visible advocate for Military and Overseas Empowerment Act (MOVE Act), which became federal law the same year.

In 2005-2006, Jessie was Chairman for Americans for Dr. Rice, a national political 527 focused on Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her political future. As Chairman, she traveled extensively to numerous state party conventions and provided political analysis for Fox News, “Fox and Friends,” MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” and CNN’s “The Situation Room.”

Jessie currently works as an independent consultant in the cyber security industry. She has a Bachelor Science degree in Business Management and is a member of Disabled American Veterans, The John Carroll Society, Women in Defense, and Woman Marines Association.
